Cloud cost savings from optimization isn't a saving — it's a receipt for past neglect. It measures the technical debt you let accumulate and the mess you finally cleaned. And you don't judge a house by how much dirt you swept up last week.


The Real Cloud Cost Savings Metrics: Cloud Value Ratio

My domain is cloud computing, across two successful transformations. One metric consistently gets proposed that I'd argue against as a scaling indicator: cost optimization savings. The problem isn't that it's inaccurate — it's that it measures efficiency, not scale. Cost savings saturates: once a transformation is architected well at the onset, further savings are marginal calibration, not growth. Worse, the metric can improve even as the business contracts — because doing less business simply costs less. A scaling metric must move with growth, not against it.

Why it fails — the contraction trap:

  • Month 1: 1,000,000 users → $100,000 cloud spend

  • Month 2: 700,000 users → $70,000 cloud spend

  • Reported: "$30,000 in cost savings" — looks like a win.

  • Reality: you lost 300,000 users. The bill shrank because the business shrank, not because you improved. A metric that flashes green while you lose a third of your customers is measuring the wrong thing.


A better indicator: The Cloud Value Ratio

This is a unit-economics view of cloud not "how much did we cut?" but "how much value does each dollar of consumption now produce?" Unlike raw savings, it rises when the business scales efficiently and falls when growth becomes expensive — so it captures scaling health directly.

The ratio climbs from 10.0 to 12.2: revenue is outpacing consumption, so each cloud dollar produces more value. That is the signal that scaling is healthy — and it's invisible to a cost-savings metric.


Guarding against the one loophole: Cloud Cost per Transaction


The Cloud Value Ratio can be inflated by raising prices rather than by real efficiency. To isolate genuine technical scale, I pair it with a per-unit measure:

If cost-per-transaction falls as volume grows, you have true economies of scale; if it stays flat or rises, you're scaling but not efficiently. Together, the two formulas can't be gamed by either shrinkage or price hikes: one asks is scaling creating value? (should rise), the other asks is scaling efficient?
